Amasaman bridge collapses

A tipper truck driver is feared dead following the sinking of his vehicle in the Densu River when the bridge on which the truck was passing collapsed. The truck, loaded with sand, was moving from Amasaman to Ashalaja in the Greater Accra Region at about 7:30 am on Tuesday when the accident occurred. The bridge, linking Ayikai Doblo in the Amasaman Municipality and Ashalaja, had apparently become too weak to withstand the weight of the sand and the truck and collapsed as a result, making the truck and its driver sink instantly. A driver’s mate was quick enough to escape from the tragedy. According to myjoyonline.com, the vehicle completely submerged because the water level in the river was high, caused by the recent heavy rains. Officers of the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces were at the scene using canoes and trying to locate the vehicle. The Ga West Municipal Assembly was completely cut off from the Ga South Municipal Assembly (Weija), making it impossible for commuters to cross from Aikai Doblo on the Amasaman side to Ashalaja in the Ga South Municipality. The District Chief Executives of both municipalities were at the scene together with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo. Some members of the community came to assist the military.
