Your first paycheck is an exciting and motivating thing — it gives you the sense of accomplishment and fuels your drive to succeed. How you spend your paycheck is an entirely different matter.
But have you ever wondered how some of the world’s richest people spent their first paychecks? Read on to find out what Warren Buffett, Mark Cuban and other successful millionaires spent their first paychecks on.
1. Warren Buffett: his first stock
Investor extraordinaire Warren Buffett got an earlier start on his wealth than most. He had already bought his first stock by 11 years old, and he was a newspaper delivery boy who was able to make $175 a month.
Buffett's net worth is an estimated $67.3 billion, according to Forbes, placing him among the three richest people in the world.
2. Mark Wahlberg: A Mercedes
Early on in Mark Wahlberg’s entertainment career, he splurged on a new car. “I spent it all on the Mercedes Benz — and didn’t have money for registration, insurance or gas,” he said, according to MadameNoire.com.
After gaining success in the music, film, and food industries, he is worth a cool $225 million, according to CelebrityNetWorth. And, the actor came in at No.10 on Forbes' list of the world's highest-paid actors of 2015.
3. Mark Cuban: a pair of basketball shoes
Mark Cuban, billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks, started making money at age 12 by selling garbage bags door-to-door. He wanted a pair of basketball shoes, but his father told him that if he wanted them he’d have to make money and buy them himself, according to DaveRamsey.com.
The young Cuban did just that and never quite slowed down. He is now worth an estimated $3 billion.
4. Kathy Griffin: her parents
The redheaded comedienne, who's worth $20 million, told People magazine at the 2014 SAG Awards how she spent her first big paycheck: “I splurged on my mom and dad first, because, you know, they’re very working class and always took care of me and paid for my acting classes and my braces, which I still hear about," she said. "So it was all about getting them a nice place to live, and that’s really the most fun part.”
5. Colin Kaepernick: a charitable cause
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has a net worth of $16 million, spent one of his first paychecks on a charitable cause, reports Mercury News.
The star quarterback gave the money he earned from his 2011 rookie season to his family and asked them to give it to a cause for children with heart issues. It went to Camp Taylor, which offers programs for children and families with heart disease.
6. Ariel Winter: a lot of shoes
Actress Ariel Winter also told People magazine at last year's SAG Awards that she blew her first paycheck on shoes. “I bought a lot of shoes. I love shoes,” she said.
The 17-year-old “Modern Family” actress is worth an estimated $7 million and earns $75,000 per episode, reports CelebrityNetWorth.
7. Dita Von Teese: lingerie
As a teenager, the burlesque star started working in a lingerie store, first as a stock girl and later in sales. “I am sure I spent almost all of my first paycheck on a gorgeous set of lingerie!" said Dita Von Teese, according to WorkingWardrobes.org.
"I actually still have that set and even based a design from my own lingerie collection on it!” Von Teese is worth an estimated $2 million.
8. Selena Gomez: her family's rent
Actress and singer Selena Gomez spent her first paycheck rather practically, helping her family afford the rent of a Los Angeles apartment after just moving from Texas.
But, Gomez did tell "Access Hollywood" in 2011 that she ended up splurging on shoes, reports The Huffington Post. "I didn't really buy anything," she said. "I got my Ford Escape." She is now worth an estimated $18 million.
9. Judge Judy: Robert Clergerie shoes
“My husband and I were civil court judges living in one room, driving a second hand car," Judith Sheindlin, star of "Judge Judy," told Page Six. "My underwear was from Costco.” But once she landed her daytime courtroom show, things turned around. Sheindlin said she was making three times her judge’s salary and was finally able to splurge.
“There were three lousy discounted pairs of Robert Clergerie shoes in navy and brown, plus full-price black ones I craved," she said. "I bought the black ones. I paid full price.”
Sheindlin is now worth an estimated $250 million.
10. Kristin Chenoweth: a Maltese Poodle
The tiny Broadway star also told Page Six that she spent her first big paycheck on a Maltese poodle whom she named Madeline after her idol Madeline Kahn. Kristin Chenoweth also splurged on a pink dog car seat so her pooch could ride safely in the car with her.
Her net worth is an estimated $10 million, making her not only one of the most unique voices in show and stage business, but also one of the highest paid.
